Launch collection and source institutions
The launch collection contains eight works by Hokusai, Van Gogh, Monet, Seurat, Caillebotte, Renoir, Vermeer, and Rembrandt. Source records come from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Rijksmuseum.
Each detail page names the artist, date, museum, accession or object number, source URL, and rights label. We verify those records before publication and retain the source link so readers can see the institution’s current statement.
Why PIQE keeps local image copies
For qualifying open reproductions, PIQE stores an optimized local copy. This avoids sending every visitor’s IP address and referrer to a museum image server, reduces broken hotlinks, and makes page performance predictable. The local file is not used to imply ownership or museum endorsement.
The museum record remains the authoritative context. If its rights status, preferred credit, or available image changes materially, PIQE will review the local copy and may update or remove it.
What PIQE adds
A public-domain image by itself is not the editorial product. PIQE samples the reproduction, selects five role colors, calculates contrast, writes distinct visual observations, proposes design applications, and explains the extraction limits. The museum’s descriptive text is not republished as PIQE commentary.
Color values are an interpretation of the displayed reproduction. They are not an official artist palette, conservation measurement, pigment identification, or museum recommendation. Screen profiles, photography, restoration, and digitization can all affect the pixels.
Rights and advertising-safety selection
Works with unclear image rights, modern copyright restrictions, missing source records, or unresolved attribution are excluded. The initial advertising-supported collection also avoids nudity, graphic injury, weapons-centered scenes, and other imagery that may create publisher-policy risk even when the art is historically important.
This commercial safety filter is not a judgment of artistic value. It is a narrow launch decision for a general-audience, advertising-supported color education site.
Rights and attribution review
Rights and metadata can change, and records can contain errors. PIQE periodically rechecks each museum record and its current rights label; the museum page linked from every analysis remains the authoritative source for current status.
PIQE can correct a credit, replace a file, link a newer source record, or remove an image when a review finds a credible issue. Removal from PIQE does not state a legal conclusion about the underlying work. PIQE does not currently accept external rights submissions.
