Hokusai’s wave feels forceful because a narrow range of blues is set against a large, warm paper field. The palette is not simply “blue and white”: muted mist, near-black outlines, and the small cedar-orange boats make the cold water legible.
Why this palette works
Dark blue carries both line and mass
The deepest blue describes the claw-like crest, the lower wave troughs, and many contour lines. Repeating one dark family for structure keeps a highly detailed image from breaking into unrelated marks.
The paper is an active warm color
The broad cream field is warmer than pure white. That temperature difference makes the blue feel colder and lets pale foam remain visible without a hard gray outline everywhere.
A small warm accent explains scale
The cedar-orange boats occupy little area, yet they separate from the blue water and lead the eye toward the people. Removing that accent would weaken both depth and the human scale of the wave.
Two ways to use it in design
Editorial interface
Use aged paper for the article canvas, Prussian depth for body text, wave blue for links, and boat cedar only for annotations or a single call to action.

Accessible contrast inside the palette
These are WCAG ratios for two opaque sRGB colors. Match the threshold to the real text size or UI role; an artwork-derived color is not automatically readable.

Extraction and editorial method
PIQE clustered sampled pixels from the Met Open Access reproduction, then retained the low-area boat orange as a compositionally important accent. HEX values are design-ready sRGB interpretations, not measurements of the original print pigments.
The process is: cluster sRGB pixels from a resized image, remove near-duplicate candidates, manually compare broad color relationships and small focal accents, then recalculate accessible pairs. PIQE’s role analysis is original and does not copy the museum description.
