The rainy street is a lesson in making neutrals distinct. Charcoal clothing, blue-gray umbrellas, stone pavement, and a warm cloudy sky are close in saturation but separated by lightness and temperature. One restrained red-brown keeps the system from feeling lifeless.
Why this palette works
Gray is a family, not one token
The scene needs several grays because pavement, fabric, sky, and distant architecture perform different jobs. Their slight blue, green, and warm biases make adjacent surfaces separable without vivid color.
The darkest value belongs to people
Wet charcoal gathers around foreground coats and hats. That value hierarchy moves the pair toward us while lighter streets and buildings open depth behind them.
Warmth appears at the edges
Muted awning and façade notes sit away from the main focal figures. Their warmth balances the blue-gray field without turning the atmosphere sunny.

Extraction and editorial method
PIQE clustered the AIC public-domain image and manually retained one low-chroma warm note. The result emphasizes functional separation among near-neutrals rather than the most saturated pixels.
The process is: cluster sRGB pixels from a resized image, remove near-duplicate candidates, manually compare broad color relationships and small focal accents, then recalculate accessible pairs. PIQE’s role analysis is original and does not copy the museum description.
