The room’s broad plaster light makes a modest blue-and-yellow uniform luminous. Deep window shadow, bread ochre, and the near-black table compress the lower half so the quiet stream of milk and the maid’s hands remain the center.
Why this palette works
The light neutral is softly yellow
The wall is not a blank white. Its warm gray-beige absorbs small shifts from window light and gives the crisp blue apron enough temperature contrast without becoming cold.
Blue and yellow divide the figure
The blue apron anchors the lower body while the yellow bodice lifts the torso into the lit wall. Their boundary makes the figure readable before the eye studies any facial detail.
Bread colors repeat the domestic warmth
Ochres move through bread, basket, jug, and clothing shadows. This repeated earth family connects the still life to the person instead of creating two separate subjects.

Recipe or craft publication
Use plaster light for long reading, window shadow for type, apron blue for links, and bodice yellow for measured highlights. Bread ochre can separate practical notes.

Extraction and editorial method
PIQE sampled the Rijksmuseum public-domain IIIF reproduction and adjusted the five selections to represent wall, apron, bodice, bread, and deep shadow as distinct design roles.
The process is: cluster sRGB pixels from a resized image, remove near-duplicate candidates, manually compare broad color relationships and small focal accents, then recalculate accessible pairs. PIQE’s role analysis is original and does not copy the museum description.
